Ideally, a healthy diet is the best source of all the vital nutrients your child needs. Dairy products, fruits, vegetables, protein and whole grains all form part of a balanced diet. But, which vitamins are the most important, and why?
Vitamins that are essential for the growth and development of babies and children include:
- Calcium
Calcium helps children develop strong bones as they grow. - Iron
Iron is necessary for muscle formation and the maintenance of healthy red blood cells. Although breastmilk is low in iron, most newborns are born with sufficient iron reserves to protect them against anaemia for at least the first 4-6 months of their lives. - Vitamin A
Vitamin A supports a healthy immune system, aids low-light vision, and maintains skin health. - Vitamin Bs
B vitamins (B2, B3, B6, and B12) help metabolism, energy production, and maintaining a healthy circulatory and nervous system. - Vitamin C
Vitamin C is essential for overall health and immunity. This vitamin also aids in the absorption of iron. - Vitamin D
Vitamin D aids in absorbing and retaining calcium and phosphorus, both of which are essential for strong bones.
Does your child need supplements?
Due to allergies, lifestyle factors or underlying medical conditions, some children require additional vitamin supplements. Dr Vahed will advise you on whether or not your child will benefit from additional supplements.
