Emergency Consultations
Our emergency consultations are designed to provide your child with rapid and comprehensive care during urgent medical situations, ensuring they receive the necessary attention when they need it most.
Why would my child need an emergency consultation?
Emergency consultations are critical when your child experiences symptoms that could indicate a severe condition requiring prompt treatment. This includes high fevers, acute respiratory infections, severe allergies, burns, or any other sudden illnesses that significantly compromise your child’s health.
What does an emergency consultation entail?
An emergency consultation with Dr Vahed involves:
- Swift Assessment: Immediate evaluation to determine the severity and cause of your child’s symptoms.
- Urgent Medical Care: Administering appropriate treatments such as medications, IV fluids, or other necessary interventions.
- Continuous Monitoring: Careful monitoring to assess response to treatment and adjust as needed to ensure the best outcome.
We are prepared to handle a range of paediatric emergencies with the utmost care and professionalism.
What should I look out for that might require an emergency consultation?
Certain signs should prompt an emergency consultation, including:
- Persistent High Fever: Persistent high fevers, especially with symptoms like rash, difficulty breathing, or signs of more severe infections like pneumonia or gastroenteritis.
- Signs of Dehydration: Dehydrated babies are fussy, sleep excessively, and urinate infrequently. When your baby has diarrhoea, it is losing water, which can lead to dehydration if your child doesn’t drink enough and keep up with the fluids it is losing. Diarrhoea and vomiting exacerbate symptoms of dehydration. Dr Vahed assists with monitoring signs of dehydration and guides keeping up with oral intake.
- Seizures: A seizure occurs due to an electrical problem in your child’s brain. They will jerk and twitch. It’s essential to remain calm and not interfere with your child until an ambulance arrives. If you’re in a dark room, switch on the lights. Learn basic CPR if your child suffers from seizures.
- Skin Infections: Insect bites can penetrate your child’s skin and are likely to become infected. Other skin conditions, like uncontrolled eczema, can become infected with open wounds. When a wound becomes swollen, red, and painful, it means it’s infected. Dr Vahed will provide skincare instructions to prevent infection.
- Burns: Burns may result from electrical, thermal, or chemical components and are categorised in terms of severity. First-degree burns are not as severe and only affect the top layer of skin. Second-degree burns affect the first and second layers of skin. Third-degree burns affect the nerves and subcutaneous tissue and require urgent medical care.
- Abdominal Pain: A majority of kids complain about stomach pain, and this is enough to warrant a visit to the paediatrician. Bowel issues such as colic and irritable bowel syndrome contribute to belly pain in children as well as constipation.
- Allergies: An allergic reaction results in symptoms such as hives, wheezing, belly pain, and inflammation. A severe allergic reaction to food or other irritants induces vomiting.
Prompt recognition and response to these symptoms can be critical for effective treatment and recovery.
