Behaviour and physical skills that newborns and children develop as they grow are known as developmental milestones. These milestones can be thought of as a checklist, indicating what a typical child should be able to achieve at various life stages. Despite this, the precise timing of each child’s milestone achievement will vary.
Well-child visits are important for Dr Vahed to identify any early signs of developmental delays. If your child is not meeting their milestones, she can recommend treatment or therapy.
What milestones do we look for?
- Physical
Both gross and fine motor skills form part of physical development in children, allowing them to move, play and eat. - Cognitive
Cognitive growth marks your child’s ability to think, learn, and solve problems. - Social and emotional
The goal of social and emotional growth is for children to have a greater knowledge of their own and others’ emotions. Learning to engage and play with others and develop empathy are all important factors in your child’s overall development. - Communication
Both verbal and nonverbal communication are vital in a child’s development. Speech and language milestones are divided into receptive language and expressive language. Beginning around the age of three, a child’s speech and language development begins to advance significantly.
